Celebrities and Medical Cannabis

As medical cannabis emerges from the shadows as a legitimate way to deal with pain and debilitating illness, more and more celebrities are openly talking about their experiences with the herb and its effectiveness in combatting chronic health issues.

Whoopi Goldberg has famously touted her love of her vape pen and how it helps her deal with glaucoma.  “The vape pen has changed my life. No, I’m not exaggerating. In fact, her name is Sippy. Yes, she’s a she. And yes, I named her Sippy because I take tiny, little sips — sassy sips, even — from her. And with each sip comes relief — from pressure, pain, stress, discomfort,” Goldberg wrote in a column she wrote for The Cannabist called “My Vape Pen and I, A Love Story.”

Breast cancer survivor and rock star Melissa Etheridge is also open about her use of medical cannabis, which she began to use while she was undergoing chemotherapy. In a guest column for CNN, she wrote, “people use marijuana for different reasons, and I needed it to get me through tough times. I used it every day during chemo: It gave me an appetite so I was able to eat and keep my strength up. It also helped with the depression, and it eased the gastrointestinal pain … I have been a medicinal marijuana smoker for nine years now. I find relief from the gastrointestinal effects of the chemo even now. I find it helps with regulating my sleep. I also enjoy it before I watch Game of Thrones.”

And now 70s and 80s superstar Olivia Newton-John is publicly discussing her use of cannabis in combatting breast cancer. “I use medicinal cannabis, which is really important for pain and healing,” she told an Australian news organization. “It’s a plant that has been maligned for so long, and has so many abilities to heal.” Newton-John survived cancer in 2012, and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia was established in her honor. Her cancer returned earlier this year, after which she revealed that she uses cannabis as part of her treatment. She plans to promote research into cannabis as a cancer treatment, saying, “I will do what I can to encourage it. It’s an important part of treatment, and it should be available.”
