Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips formed in 1983 in Oklahoma City. The formation of the band revolves around founder and lead guitarist Wayne Coyne, who stole a collection of instruments from a church hall and enlisted his vocalist and brother, Mark Coyne as well as his bassist Michael Ivins to start a band. They located Richard English, the band’s drummer, after going through several stints of drummers. Several albums were recorded by the band on the indie label Restless in the early 1980s and 1990s. In 1996, the band went through much turmoil with band members leaving for “spiritual odysseys” and never returning, hands almost amputated due to spider bites, and hit-and-run accidents. The band would return the following year and record a four-disc set that was designed to be played simultaneously. The Flaming Lips have been nominated for six Grammy awards and won three, two of which were for “Best Rock Instrumental Performance.”
