Neil deGrasse Tyson Supports an End to Prohibition

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of the smartest people on the planet, and yesterday as part of a Facebook live discussion, he confirmed that he’s in favor of the legalization of cannabis.

Speculation about the scientist’s stance on ending prohibition has built since his 2015 Reddit Ask Me Anything session when he was asked, “How much of an impact do you think drugs (psychedelics) have had on art over the centuries?”

“For me,” Tyson answered, “the least altered state of awareness I can achieve is the one that I seek, because that one is most likely to be closest to reality.” He went on to say, “I used to write a question and answer column while I was drinking a bottle of wine. And I was thinking, you know like Hemingway, with his bottle of whatever he drank. You know, the alcohol and the writer. This is like almost a trope. And I thought I wrote some awesome stuff. And then a few years later I looked back at what I wrote then and I said, ‘No, that’s not awesome.’ I thought it was awesome at the time. In the state of mind that I wrote it, I thought it was awesome. Later on I was like, ‘No, I write better than that not drinking wine while I’m writing.’”

While that’s an interesting digression, it’s not really an answer, Dr. Tyson.

Tyson was much more transparent yesterday when he was asked if he agreed with Carl Sagan on the late scientist’s belief that cannabis should be legalized. “If you really analyze it, relative to other things that are legal, there’s no reason for [marijuana] to ever have been made illegal in the system of laws,” he said. “Alcohol is legal and it can mess you up way more than smoking a few jays.”

Now that’s an answer we can get behind. While Dr. Tyson doesn’t indicate that he himself consumes cannabis, he’s not opposed to the idea.

If you like the idea of “smoking a few jays,” we suggest trying one (or more!) of The Green Solution’s Pre-Rolls. If yesterday’s interview is any indication, it seems like Neil deGrasse Tyson would approve.
