Cannabis Use on the Rise Among Parents

“Sometimes I feel like I can’t complete one thought, let alone the 25 requests my kids have just made. Pot has the same effect on me as 20 minutes of yoga, but I don’t have time for 20 minutes of yoga.” So says Anna, a 37-year-old mother of two in Santa Monica, California, and she’s not alone. A study of over 10,000 cannabis consumers was recently conducted by Eaze Insights, and its findings indicate that 20% of them are parents. Given the fact that 18% of people who are 26 – 34 (Millennials) and 9% of those 35 – 49 (Gen Xers) have consumed cannabis in the last year, it’s not surprising that a significant portion of those people are parents.

Sheena Shiravi, the head of PR for Eaze says, “It’s not surprising to think that parents are using cannabis every day. Think about how often a mom reaches for a glass of wine or takes Tylenol or pain killer for a headache or back pain.” Indeed, “Marijuana Moms” are coming out of the cannabis closet now that legalization is spreading.

Kaycee Bawdon, founder of the blog “The Cannavist Mom,” is a leader in the movement.  “Mommy needs a joint just as much as mommy needs a glass of wine,” she told Maria Shriver on the Today Show. “You can still be a good parent and use marijuana at the same time. I’ve heard from hundreds of moms who use marijuana,” she said. “They’re happy that I’m out there, putting it out there. There are so many moms that are still hiding because they’re ashamed. And you shouldn’t be ashamed.”
