CBD and Sports

Slowly, and we hope surely, the world is beginning to realize the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD). One of the latest entities to drop the prohibition against CBD is the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), a group created by the International Olympic Committee to promote, coordinate, and monitor the fight against drugs in sports. WADA maintains a list of banned and approved substances that hundreds of worldwide sports organizations use. The 2018 list clearly makes an exception for CBD.

Add to this the recent statement by former NBA commissioner David Stern that CBD should be “taken off the banned list,” and it begins to look as if elite athletic organizations are leading the charge for more research into, if not federal legalization of, CBD. The NFL, however, continues to ban CBD and all other forms of cannabis. That’s particularly unfortunate given that football players frequently suffer from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and other debilitating injuries for which CBD could potentially provide relief.

In spite of the NFL ban, at least two players (Eugene Monroe and Derrick Morgan) have joined When the Bright Lights Fade, the campaign for research into how CBD can benefit retired football players. Also, former NFL player Marvin Washington is one of five plaintiffs currently challenging the federal government’s classification of cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug. Washington said, “As a former professional athlete, CBD is oil for the tin man. I take a CBD tincture daily and use CBD-based cream for muscular aches and soreness.”
