Do I Want THC or CBD…or Both?

Before legalization, so little reliable information about cannabis was available to the public. You could consume cannabis your whole life and not know the difference between indica and sativa, much less the intricacies of terpenes and cannabinoids. But, thankfully, things are different now, and The Green Solution is here to educate you on everything you need to know about our favorite plant.

Two terms that frequently come up in discussions about cannabis are THC and CBD. Have you ever wondered what they mean? Here’s a simple breakdown.

  • What do the letters stand for?

THC = tetrahydrocannabinol

CBD = cannabidiol

  • What are THC and CBD?

Both are chemical compounds called cannabinoids that are secreted by the flowers of the cannabis plant. Without getting too deep into the scientific weeds (ha! See what I did there?), it’s useful to know that we all have within us a system that mediates communication between cells through natural compounds called endocannabinoids. THC and CBD (and the other dozens of cannabinoids) imitate these naturally occurring compounds and bind with receptor sites throughout our bodies, resulting in the effects we feel after consuming cannabis.

  • How are they different from one another?

Simply put, THC is psychoactive (meaning it produces a “high” effect) and CBD is not. To get a little more technical, THC binds with the cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptors in the brain to produce its euphoric effect, while CBD binds with the cannabinoid 2 (CB2) receptors that exist outside of the brain and nervous system. So, while CBD has the effect of enhancing the homeostasis (or balance) of the endocannabinoid system, it has no intoxicating effects.

  • So, THC will make me high. What will CBD do?

Great question! Because cannabis is still federally illegal, scientific study of its medicinal effects has been severely limited. However, preliminary studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that CBD is useful in combatting a number of conditions and symptoms, including PTSD and anxiety, Crohn’s disease, opioid withdrawal, epilepsy and seizure disorders, pain and inflammation, and Multiple Sclerosis.

  • Does The Green Solution offer CBD products?

Absolutely. We carry a variety of high-CBD products, including a scrumptious Hazelnut Chai Truffle and flavorless CBD Natural Tincture from NectarBee.
